tour update
Oct. 12th, 2008 | 06:11 pm
tour as been really awesome! getting off and on the trains, metros, and trams is really difficult but totally worth every trouble. we've met lots of awesome people who want us to come back for their festivals (crossing fingers). here is a link to brittany's flicker page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brittanygo uld
i look really tired in some of them. too much traveling not enough sleep but totally great!
We are in lyon now with a few days off. Trying to figure out all the last minute plans. The last few train rides are going to be tough. We have to get to Linz, Austria on the 17th which is quit a distance from France. We are thinking of going back up to Paris for a few days and then leaving from Paris. Just have to find a place to sleep. Trying to not spend more money then we need too. We also have to figure out the best way to get from Linz, Austria to Fontanelle TV, then from Fontanelle TV to Rome, Rome to Milan, and finally find a place to sleep in Milan to get to the airport in Malpensa the next day. A lot of planning. Anyone have suggestions??
Its going to be great to play in Italy just a lot of work. Then off to the UK where we are going to play an Upset the Rhythm show. We will have a few days in London to hang out with Brittany's best friend Ashley. Then we have to take a mega bus to glasgow to play a show and then back to Berlin. Steven from Birds of Delay is going to try to set up a show for us in Berlin on the last night in town. Our Berlin show has been the only weird show on the tour. Luckily all the other shows made up for it.
Writing all this down made me realize we still have a lot traveling ahead of us. Have to stay healthy as possible.

getting ready
Sep. 27th, 2008 | 03:11 am
started packing my bag today. Its kinda hard to decide what I am going to need for a month of travel. Usually I don't worry about it because there is always room in a car but deciding how important it is to carry an extra pair of pants is important when traveling by train.
We have a show tomorrow at the Smell with Gowns. Should be awesome. My last day at work in on Sunday. We need to find a ride to the airport on Wednesday. Can anyone help?
Things to do before I leave:
-pay phone bill
-cash last check
-go to AAA and exchange $ for euros
-go to macy's
-buy snacks for the plane ride
-Send off last hate state orders
We are also doing a live performance at P.O.X radio on Tuesday night at UC Irvine. Not sure how far it broadcast but listen in around 10pm if you get reception. It might even be streamed. I don't really know.
Brian emailed me to let me know that Jason took FV to rent bikes so that Jason can give them a tour of Berlin. That sounds like so much fun. I hope we get to do the same. The first show in europe will be on Brittany's birthday. Can't wait!
oh its late. I'm tired.

Art by Jake Blanchard,
who also did the art for the Blackest Rainbow release.
Brittany will be here on Tuesday!!!! Unfortunately I still have to work until I'm gone. My work is being lame and acting like they might not hold my position for me. I don't care. Everyday I'm amazed at myself for keeping up with it. I'm not good a holding a steady job. I'm surprised I'm still there.
Brittany and I are playing three shows before we leave. Two in LA and one in San Diego. We also got asked to do two radio shows. It might be a bit too much before we leave since I will be working but I'm gonna try. Brittany will be around for a few days after we get back so one of the radio shows might work for later. Apr. 3rd, 2008 | 09:16 pm
Dude, how can I explain what has happened in the 9 months. I just can't. I probably don't even remember what happened. But for realz a lot of cool shit has happened. Like the fact that I live in a really awesome house where we do shows and have parties. Like the one this weekend with Ettrick (Sat April 5th) Or the fact that I recently went to sxsw with foot village and played two really amazing shows. Oh yeah, I did a cali tour with Sword Heaven last fall and it totally ruled playing with them every night. It was totally inspiring on both ends that is truly special for me personally. I always feel honored when people I really respect as musicians like what I do. It makes it come full circle an a way.
I have two new musical projects that I've been working on that are both equally as awesome. Winners and Caldera Lakes.
Winners is with my good friend Andrew who I ask to be in a band with after I came to the conclusion that he would be an awesome front man. And you know what it was totally true! We are playing the record release party for Foot Village on Monday April 7th at the Smell. If you are in LA please come it will be totally awesome. Robin Williams on Fire will be playing their last show EVER!!!!!!! And of course Dan Deacon will not be playing. But the master or party noise will aka Kyle H Mabson. Winners has also just put out the first release and it totally kicks ass. Its called Mega Dik and it comes with a zine and a remix by Nero's Day at Disneyland. Speaking of which, I did a colab with Brock in the summer and the song is so good I have it up on my personal myspace page. Brock is a genius. I don't care what anyone else says. He make my sounds into a dance song.
Caldera Lakes is Brittany from Married in Berdichev and I. Basically its amazing. The first time I met Brittany I felt like I had known her forever. We have a chemistry when we play music together. Its totally awesome. And I can't wait to go on tour with her. its going to be unreal.
If you haven't added any of my new projects on myspace please do. myspace.com/winners and myspace.com/calderalakes

shitsville
Jun. 2nd, 2007 | 08:02 pm
I feel really shitty right now mainly because I'm so broke and I'm about to go on a month long tour. Shit just keeps coming up and who has to pay for it all is Brian. It makes me feel really irresponsible and worthless. I worry that in a month or so he will be in that situation as well and then both of us will be fucked.
I probably don't deserve to go on tour.
If anyone want to buy anything from me email be at hatestate AT gmail DOT com I'll give you discounts.
for real.

New on Hate State!!!
Apr. 17th, 2007 | 07:24 pm
2 new ones out today on Hate State, plus pre-order now available for
the 6 c30 cassette wall-noise boxset, None Shadow. Paypal, images,
etc at HATE STATE
new releases:

HS009
LOVE LETTERS
Santeria c-32
US $6, World $10
======================================== =======================
Not only about santeria, but also recorded
in the same geography where these chaotic, culture clashing
magics are soaked into the land. Although you
can hear these sounds, their true voice can
only be heard by the dead.

HS012
MOMENT TRIGGER
Poluted Wave 3" cdr
US $6, World $10
======================================== ========================
Moment Trigger put on one of the most
exciting live shows of any noise act in LA.
The physical struggle that occurs between this
woman and man does not result in destruction, but
rather shows a vigor and love for high energy sounds
that cannot be contained by cooperation. Equipment
is fought over as if every piece of gear is the holy grail.
This passion creates a sound with so much
movement that you may get sea sick listening to it.
pre-order:

HS011
various artists
NONE SHADOW 6x c-30
US $50, World $60
======================================== =========================
Wall is not just about pushing the limits of saturation, the limits of how
infinitely large something can sound. Wall is also about the infinitely small.
The nuance that exists between every detail of every crackle. So deep
is every crevice that even the shortest moment could fit the entire
whole into it. None Shadow features 6 artists (Taskmaster, Privy
Seals, Kakerlak,
Filthy Turd, Cherry point, & the Rita) creating walls that push the
possibilities
far beyond purity. This is the ineffable sound of course.
Packaged in a handmade rug with analogous infinite-crevice imagery.

False Prophet Review
Mar. 30th, 2007 | 03:48 am
Kevin Shields False Prophet LP (Deathbomb Arc)
Better than average contact mic fuckery for one simple reason:
Thems songs here! I don't know if K. Shields planned things out but
they certainly have a sense of Beginning, Middle, and End. They also
knows how to create tension and they gives their noise some hooks.
Very few noisesters, yesterday or today, can claim that. I am looking
forward to more! --SS

Hate State's first Press!
Jan. 17th, 2007 | 03:09 am
David Cotner who does the 'Basement Valkyries' column in 'Signal to Noise' magazine dedicated a portion of the most current issue (#44) to review Hate State and first 4 releases. Whoa! Here is the review:
Eva Aguila, possibly one of the hardest-working women in showbidness, has come out strong with her new Hate State label. Why so hard-working, you scoff? Because Hate State is the label whose 3” CD-Rs and cassettes come in sleeves that are individually crocheted to fit. That’s right, the knit-wits at Hate State have come up with a viable artistic solutions to the problem of file-sharing and bootlegging: why would you want a crappy file whose sound-waves stack up like spiral staircases when you could have a tape with a shell the color of a retarded fish inside a soft, knitted shell? Their “Zen-style crochet case” is one of the nicest developments to happen to the Nowhere Underground this year, fulfilling an aspect missing from the experience of appreciating art: touch. The first item – sold-out, duh – is a c-10 by Kevin Shields (not the My Bloody Valentine guitarist; he spends so much time in the studio that he hasn’t sued yet) and Solitary Hunter (Hate State, HS001) Solitary Hunter manning a circuit-bent acoustic guitar and Kevin Shields doing his doctor thing on a nice long slab of meaty noise. Also in the series: the Oubliette “Mitochondrion” c10 (Hate State, HS002), the Persimmons Pomegranate Woof Matter” (Hate State, HS003), and the Kevin Shields “Hair Line” 3” CDR (Hate State, HS004), with cassettes by Torturing Nurse, Pedestrian Deposit / Powdered Wigs, and God Willing, due within moments. A 10-minute cassette means that you get the maximum effect of exploring new lands without feeling like you wasted a lot of time in the process. Additionally, Zen-style crochet cases make great homes for mice or hats for cats. As for the corporations, there’s no way possible that they can rival the sheer American folk pluck of the Hate State label, whose output thus far has written a new definition of beauty. They just need to generate a level of cognitive dissonance that won’t make them look like idiots. Which is, like, important or something.

Virgin Passwords
which is a split 12" between Brian Miller & Kevin Shields / Pump Kinn & Don
is out NOW on Weird Forest http://weirdforest.com

Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months of touring, Virgin Passwords
reflects a long evolution in sound and concept for Brian Miller &
Kevin Shields. A combination of mechanical grindings and digital
sweeps, mortal shovings and sudden transportations
into secret chambers hold the secrets of the Virgins themselves. The
Virgins that control
the universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond the cliched metaphor of
purity and straight to literally not having sex at all. Because a Brian Miller
& Kevin Shields performances prooves that a noise show can be
(hyper)active, crowd engaging, and knock everything to the floor
without invoking angst and self loathing. In other words, without hate-fucking
everyone. Virgins.
PS that is totally my mom, grandma, and uncles hanging out at the beach in the 70's

David Cotner who is a journalist for various magazines, newspapers, etc... was asked to do his Top [blank] of 2006 for this contest that Idolator.com is doing. And I'm included! Such an awesome compliment, I don't know what to say except THANKS. Of course I didn't win but what the hell.

A satanically, aggressively dull year for music. That the rise of YouTube - and all the good-hearted, candy-coated '70s-'80s nostalgia that that implies - was the biggest item this year spoke copious volumes for the state of the art. A few good forms are reworked and yet the ever-encroaching "Sargasso sea of absolute garbage" creeps closer to shore. This is not so much negativity made bond as it is the art of deeper diamond hunting (Neil and Lavender excluded from the discount, thank you for shopping), with the gems shining truly and sincerely amidst the flawed stones strewn across the path. The specter of illegal downloading and file-sharing pales unto arch-beigeness when compared to the shelves upon warehouse shelves of musicians you don't care about, don't want to care about, don't want to possibly even think of perhaps maybe dreaming to try to attempt to faintly care about before the dream turns into a nightmare of wanting desperately to care - and vanishes like a fart on infrared. What's next for 2007? Unclear, but it's just five scant years before peak oil, massive shorts on tinfoil and fluoride futures, and total Mayan apocalypse. So make the best of it. If you live.
