tour update

tour as been really awesome! getting off and on the trains, metros, and trams is really difficult but totally worth every trouble. we've met lots of awesome people who want us to come back for their festivals (crossing fingers). here is a link to brittany's flicker page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brittanygould

i look really tired in some of them. too much traveling not enough sleep but totally great!

We are in lyon now with a few days off. Trying to figure out all the last minute plans. The last few train rides are going to be tough. We have to get to Linz, Austria on the 17th which is quit a distance from France. We are thinking of going back up to Paris for a few days and then leaving from Paris. Just have to find a place to sleep. Trying to not spend more money then we need too. We also have to figure out the best way to get from Linz, Austria to Fontanelle TV, then from Fontanelle TV to Rome, Rome to Milan, and finally find a place to sleep in Milan to get to the airport in Malpensa the next day. A lot of planning. Anyone have suggestions??

Its going to be great to play in Italy just a lot of work. Then off to the UK where we are going to play an Upset the Rhythm show. We will have a few days in London to hang out with Brittany's best friend Ashley. Then we have to take a mega bus to glasgow to play a show and then back to Berlin. Steven from Birds of Delay is going to try to set up a show for us in Berlin on the last night in town. Our Berlin show has been the only weird show on the tour. Luckily all the other shows made up for it.

Writing all this down made me realize we still have a lot traveling ahead of us. Have to stay healthy as possible.

getting ready

started packing my bag today. Its kinda hard to decide what I am going to need for a month of travel. Usually I don't worry about it because there is always room in a car but deciding how important it is to carry an extra pair of pants is important when traveling by train.

We have a show tomorrow at the Smell with Gowns. Should be awesome. My last day at work in on Sunday. We need to find a ride to the airport on Wednesday. Can anyone help?

Things to do before I leave:

-pay phone bill
-cash last check
-go to AAA and exchange $ for euros
-go to macy's
-buy snacks for the plane ride
-Send off last hate state orders

We are also doing a live performance at P.O.X radio on Tuesday night at UC Irvine. Not sure how far it broadcast but listen in around 10pm if you get reception. It might even be streamed. I don't really know.

Brian emailed me to let me know that Jason took FV to rent bikes so that Jason can give them a tour of Berlin. That sounds like so much fun. I hope we get to do the same. The first show in europe will be on Brittany's birthday. Can't wait!

oh its late. I'm tired.

I feel really shitty right now mainly because I'm so broke and I'm about to go on a month long tour. Shit just keeps coming up and who has to pay for it all is Brian. It makes me feel really irresponsible and worthless. I worry that in a month or so he will be in that situation as well and then both of us will be fucked.

I probably don't deserve to go on tour.

If anyone want to buy anything from me email be at hatestate AT gmail DOT com I'll give you discounts.

for real.

Equipment
is fought over as if every piece of gear is the holy grail.
This passion creates a sound with so much
movement that you may get sea sick listening to it.

pre-order:

HS011
various artists
NONE SHADOW 6x c-30
US $50, World $60
=================================================================
Wall is not just about pushing the limits of saturation, the limits of how
infinitely large something can sound. Wall is also about the infinitely small.
The nuance that exists between every detail of every crackle. So deep
is every crevice that even the shortest moment could fit the entire
whole into it. None Shadow features 6 artists (Taskmaster, Privy
Seals, Kakerlak,
Filthy Turd, Cherry point, & the Rita) creating walls that push the
possibilities
far beyond purity. This is the ineffable sound of course.
Packaged in a handmade rug with analogous infinite-crevice imagery.

False Prophet Review

Kevin Shields False Prophet LP (Deathbomb Arc)
Better than average contact mic fuckery for one simple reason:
Thems songs here! I don't know if K. Shields planned things out but
they certainly have a sense of Beginning, Middle, and End. They also
knows how to create tension and they gives their noise some hooks.
Very few noisesters, yesterday or today, can claim that. I am looking
forward to more! --SS

Hate State's first Press!

David Cotner who does the 'Basement Valkyries' column in 'Signal to Noise' magazine dedicated a portion of the most current issue (#44) to review Hate State and first 4 releases. Whoa! Here is the review:

Eva Aguila, possibly one of the hardest-working women in showbidness, has come out strong with her new Hate State label. Why so hard-working, you scoff? Because Hate State is the label whose 3” CD-Rs and cassettes come in sleeves that are individually crocheted to fit. That’s right, the knit-wits at Hate State have come up with a viable artistic solutions to the problem of file-sharing and bootlegging: why would you want a crappy file whose sound-waves stack up like spiral staircases when you could have a tape with a shell the color of a retarded fish inside a soft, knitted shell? Their “Zen-style crochet case” is one of the nicest developments to happen to the Nowhere Underground this year, fulfilling an aspect missing from the experience of appreciating art: touch. The first item – sold-out, duh – is a c-10 by Kevin Shields (not the My Bloody Valentine guitarist; he spends so much time in the studio that he hasn’t sued yet) and Solitary Hunter (Hate State, HS001) Solitary Hunter manning a circuit-bent acoustic guitar and Kevin Shields doing his doctor thing on a nice long slab of meaty noise. Also in the series: the Oubliette “Mitochondrion” c10 (Hate State, HS002), the Persimmons Pomegranate Woof Matter” (Hate State, HS003), and the Kevin Shields “Hair Line” 3” CDR (Hate State, HS004), with cassettes by Torturing Nurse, Pedestrian Deposit / Powdered Wigs, and God Willing, due within moments. A 10-minute cassette means that you get the maximum effect of exploring new lands without feeling like you wasted a lot of time in the process. Additionally, Zen-style crochet cases make great homes for mice or hats for cats. As for the corporations, there’s no way possible that they can rival the sheer American folk pluck of the Hate State label, whose output thus far has written a new definition of beauty. They just need to generate a level of cognitive dissonance that won’t make them look like idiots. Which is, like, important or something.

Virgin Passwords
which is a split 12" between Brian Miller & Kevin Shields / Pump Kinn & Don

is out NOW on Weird Forest http://weirdforest.com

Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months of touring, Virgin Passwords
reflects a long evolution in sound and concept for Brian Miller &
Kevin Shields. A combination of mechanical grindings and digital
sweeps, mortal shovings and sudden transportations
into secret chambers hold the secrets of the Virgins themselves. The
Virgins that control
the universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond the cliched metaphor of
purity and straight to literally not having sex at all. Because a Brian Miller
& Kevin Shields performances prooves that a noise show can be
(hyper)active, crowd engaging, and knock everything to the floor
without invoking angst and self loathing. In other words, without hate-fucking
everyone. Virgins.

PS that is totally my mom, grandma, and uncles hanging out at the beach in the 70's

That the rise of YouTube - and all the good-hearted, candy-coated '70s-'80s nostalgia that that implies - was the biggest item this year spoke copious volumes for the state of the art. A few good forms are reworked and yet the ever-encroaching "Sargasso sea of absolute garbage" creeps closer to shore. This is not so much negativity made bond as it is the art of deeper diamond hunting (Neil and Lavender excluded from the discount, thank you for shopping), with the gems shining truly and sincerely amidst the flawed stones strewn across the path. The specter of illegal downloading and file-sharing pales unto arch-beigeness when compared to the shelves upon warehouse shelves of musicians you don't care about, don't want to care about, don't want to possibly even think of perhaps maybe dreaming to try to attempt to faintly care about before the dream turns into a nightmare of wanting desperately to care - and vanishes like a fart on infrared. What's next for 2007? Unclear, but it's just five scant years before peak oil, massive shorts on tinfoil and fluoride futures, and total Mayan apocalypse. So make the best of it. If you live.

His top list can be found here: http://www.idolator.com/?op=jp_showpoll&user_id=42907

Final results are here: http://idolator.com/jackinpop2006

This new years party was amazing! All my housemates, Natasha, Steven, and I drove up to Oakland for a party/show at the Huffin House. All I can say is burning christmas trees rules and NOISE rules harder!

Here are pictures of me playing:

Everyone played awesome sets.
Merry Christmas! ...and more

This Christmas has been the happiest and saddest Christmas I've had. I've spent it with almost everyone I planned on seeing.

Friday-we had a party at our house for all of our friends. Brian and I made tempura, dumplings, and sushi. It followed by having a few sake bombs before heading to the recording session of sake bomb the song. Over all it was really fun. Natasha got crazy as usual but it only seems to bring more entertainment to all the boys.

Saturday-Woke up with a pleasant hang over. Have some coffee and then hit the road. Brian and I needed to be in Oceanside by 6:30 pm for a Christmas Dinner Party that Mike from Gang Wizard was throwing. I still have some Christmas errands to run and Matt also needed to get dropped off at the greyhound so leaving as soon as possible was crucial. The dinner was nice. Mary, Mike’s wife cooked a five-course meal. I only started to become uncomfortable when Mary and Mikes mom started talking about the bible and god. We left Oceanside at 12:00am to drive in El Monte. Brian and I were staying at my parents to make it easier on us.

Sunday-Visiting my parents was weird. My two brothers stopped coming around for Christmas this last couple of years. Saul became a Johojo Witness last winter and my other brother Carlos hates my parents now. Saul is also moving to Texas with his family in a week. I was really hoping to see them once at least before they leave. I guess Southern California is becoming too expensive for them. I wish Carlos would stop being such a baby about shit. I was kinda hard opening presents with my parents. I sensed a feeling of sadness coming from my father. My dad has always been a loving dad. Don't really know why my brother has turned against them. I know my mom gets on peoples nerves sometimes but in the end it seems to pity to hold a grudge over. I left my parents house to go met up with Brian and his parents. We made plans to open presents with them too. Brian's mom seems to like me more and more as time goes on. Hanging out with her and Al without being afraid to say the wrong thing is awesome. Al even started expressing interest in meeting my family. I'm a little weary of that since Brian's mom seems to be a little critical of people. My parents are not rich nor do they know how to be classy. For the most part they are really shy and timid people. Brian's parents got me all these gift card to my favorite stores and but the best part of all, Brian gave me the complete Werner Herzog documentary Boxset!!! I love Herzog documentaries but I know I would never buy it for myself because I'm much too practical sometimes. I got Brian a really practical gift this year. He had been saying how he needed pajamas for the winter so I bought him some heavy duty sweets but the best part of all, I gave him snuggle the bear to go with the sweets. I thought it was cute. We later went to bed and watched a movie.

Monday-Woke up at noon and drove to Brian's dad’s side of the family gathering. Grandma Elaine gave me more useful gift card and other thoughtful gifts. We ate some good fun and had some great laughs. Brian pet the fuzzy cat at their house and Brian's cousin made me some Turkish coffee to go along with some homemade bisquetti. Brian wasn't feeling well so we heading home early. When we got home I had a chance to catch up on emails. He waited for Rob to get home and then opened more presents! Rob got me a multi power source for all my petals and Val got me a my little pony. I opened Cano's gift, which was a My Little Pony Calendar!! So stoked to get more pony stuff. Rob also got me MLP cups! I think everyone in the house enjoyed all there presents. Rob got Ren a bunch of pizza making supplies, which he used once Chris and Tierra and John Meyer from Oakland arrived. It felt really nice to be loved by so many friends this Christmas. Sucks that Brian still wasn't feeling well and Rob went to bed early because we was sick too. We watch the cops videos Brian got for Christmas from Ren.

Brian, Grandma Elaine, Al, and I are supposed to have lunch together tomorrow. Elaine really wants to see where we live. Hopefully it works out. Brian is also supposed to go to his 10th anniversary high school reunion. I'm not sure if I should go.

New Years is in a week and I think Brian and I are going to carpool with a bunch of people to Oakland. John Meyer is throwing a party/show at his warehouse space. It should be fun. I think Amy is going to be there. I'm hoping that she and I get to play a KS set together. It always feels like magic when I play with her.

The plane tickets for Belgium have been bought already. Brian, Mike, Ren, Jake, and I are playing this really big fest that record label, Fatcat organizes. We are there for almost two weeks so hopefully we get to play other countries. There is talk of Holland so far. It’s going to be my first time in Europe!! I had to get my passport for the first time. Because of this special opportunity to play music I finally told my parents I played music. They seem upset at first but I think they are proud of me. My parents have never been supportive of me doing any type of art. They have always seen it as a waste of time and energy. They would rather see me working a stable 9-5 office job saving money to buy a nice car and house. Me living in 'poor conditions' challenges them as persons. But I figure them knowing of this great opportunity tells them I might actually be 'successful'. My dad is getting laid off of work next month and won’t know the next time he can find a job doing the same thing. The skills that he has in this day and age are considered obsolete. He says he wants to go back to school to learn the computer side of things but I'm worried that he might not be receptive to that sort of thing. Brian's dad says that if he learned how to use that stuff he would be set for life. I'm hoping something comes about that. If not I hope to be 'successful' to help me parents. I don’t really like seeing my parents worry about their future. They are entering their late 50’s and can’t really do labor intensive work anymore.

This year has been really amazing. So many unexpected positives things happened. I hope the same goes for 2007

now available on Hates State
http://hatestate. info

Captain Ahab
The Great Disappointment 3" cdr
USA $20 / WORLD $30
http://diyresources .info/hatestate/ hs008.htm
============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= =====
Devotional music.
Exceeding even the compositional mastery displayed on After the Rain..., Captain Ahab takes a moment
away from the worship of ass and money to praise God (shockingly, without a hint of irony). 9 exclusive, complex beat/noise driven songs for an even more complex concept. Packaged in a handmade cross stitched pouch.
